What are the criteria considered for the quality of jibes?

Hello, I searched but couldn’t find the answer.

I would like to know from what speed a jibe in windsurfing, wing, and windfoil is considered to be planing or flying?

The data collected is not necessarily accurate during my last session at Les Minimes on March 25th. I had a failed jibe even though I fell much more often?

I purchased a 1-year subscription to reward all this development work!

Hi Sébastien, thanks for the subscription — much appreciated!

Planing/flying threshold If you open a session and look at the speed chart, you’ll see a red dotted line — that’s the planing/flying threshold for your sport and discipline. During a jibe, the goal is to stay above that line throughout the turn.

Why the app may count a jibe as successful even when you fell The app evaluates the maneuver itself — the turn — not what happens immediately after. Two common cases where this leads to confusion:

  • Foiling: You complete the turn cleanly, but crash during the foot switch afterward. The turn was a flying jibe; the crash was a separate event.
  • Windsurfing: You stay on the plane through the turn, but need a few pumps at the exit to maintain speed in a lull. The turn itself was planed — what happens in the next few meters is a different skill entirely.

This is intentional: pumping out of a lull and switching feet are techniques independent of whether the jibe itself was executed on the plane.

For the overall picture of how well a session went, the total planing/flying duration and the longest continuous stretch give a fuller view than jibe count alone.

Hope that clears it up!

Ok, I understand better now, thanks for the explanations.

I think that’s where the problem lies. I’m talking about falls, and the places where I windsurf there’s current, so the app shouldn’t distinguish between finishing a jibe without enough wind to regain planing and a fall where you continue to move slowly with the current.

If I take the example of my session, I fell 6 or 7 times. For me, these aren’t successful jibes, but the app only detected one as a failure.

The V1 of the app was more accurate in this regard

If you fall into the water, the app should detect this regardless of current — the current would only affect movement after the fall, during the restart.

To clarify how the app classifies jibes:

  • Fully planed/flying — you maintained speed through the entire turn
  • Not planed / partially planed — you didn’t fall, but lost the plane at some point
  • Fall — you went into the water, planed or not

If you could send me the original session file to support@sunbits.de, I’m happy to take a look. It’s possible the algorithm needs further tuning, or there’s something specific to the current conditions at your spot.
