New version questions

Thank you for this great app!

When will the new version be released?
Will the data from the old version be transferred over?
Will Google simply push the update through the Android Store?

I have a Sony SafeTrx watch. I can only view the data online in the SafeTrx Portal. There is no export function there. If I let Strava fetch the data, I can download a GPX file. I import this into your app and can manually set the wind direction. For this, I check Windfinder. The polar plot and automatic wind direction unfortunately don’t work with the Strava file.

Can I somehow allow your app to fetch my SafeTrx data, like with Strava?

When I try to run your app directly on my phone, it records for 1 minute. I have an old Xiaomi 10T Pro. I think the app is simply stopped when the screen locks (goes dark). What can I do?

Thanks, says Björn aka Instagram zeborac

Hello,

The new app is almost ready, just a few more days. Data migration will work and the update will be available through the Play Store.

It’s unfortunate that SafeTrx doesn’t offer an export option. Using Strava unfortunately loses important information like course and speed. These would need to be calculated, which isn’t very accurate.

For WST to receive the data, SafeTrx would need to provide an option for that. They might store the data in public storage, which means you’d need to search your phone with a file explorer to see if you can find any files in the SafeTrx folders. Unfortunately, I fear not.

If you record directly with your phone and it stops after a minute, it’s because Xiaomi wants to save battery and therefore simply turns off the GPS again. Check this website to see if you can find a setting for your phone that can prevent this behavior for the WST app:

Manufacturers unfortunately build in this behavior so they can advertise longer battery life in their marketing. This unfortunately comes at the cost of functionality for many apps. As developers, we can only follow Google’s guidelines, and if manufacturers don’t do the same, the outlook is unfortunately poor.

Best regards

Thank you for the help! I was finally able to disable the power-saving function on my Xiaomi phone! Now the app records on the phone for over an hour. I’m already looking forward to the new version.

Have you heard of thesurfr.app? I’m not far enough along with wingfoiling to jump yet, but it’s definitely interesting for kiters to know how high their jump was.

Unfortunately, my SafeTrx watch has given up the ghost. Is a Safeandrescue service planned? So position transmission to the coast guard or a pick-up signal to the buddy?

Thanks again for the great work here, even though I only get a so-so smiley in the app. I just need to practice more!

Hello,
that’s great to hear.

A Safe And Rescue service is not planned. I’m considering a feature for an emergency call. However, the background is that if you record with a smartphone, it already has a very good emergency call function. Especially one that is controlled via buttons, which greatly simplifies operation in water and especially in winter. I tend to recommend this function because it is a general solution and not just a very specific one in an app.
The new devices now also have a satellite connection to ensure that you have reception. Some smartwatches that have already integrated this also use the LTE-M band, which has a much greater range near the coast.

Would that be something for you?

Thank you! Of course, it’s much better to contact the rescue station See directly. Yes, my phone also has this emergency call function where you just quickly press the on/off button one after the other.

The new version is now live, including an app for WearOs.

Enjoy!
