I have been recording my sessions for years and I am thrilled with this great app.
For a few months now - perhaps since Wingfoiling was introduced as a category - the tracker no longer recognizes any jibes. For example, out of 30 jibes, it recorded 3 as failed. The other jibes are not detected at all. It also no longer recognizes the jibes I successfully completed (powered jibes).
I have already read here that unfortunately I cannot manually adjust the gliding/foiling speed. Perhaps it would be possible to add a Light Wind Foiling category with a gliding speed of 7 km/h!?
I would be delighted if the tracker could register the jibes again so that I can use this statistic once more, as I used to do before. Back then, I set it to Kite and Foil, which worked well/better for wingfoiling.
If the wind directions are no longer being recognized, it could be because the wind direction is not set correctly. You can adjust it via the menu in the top right corner.
There is already a dedicated discipline for wind foiling: Lightwindfoil. If you select this, the planing threshold will be adjusted accordingly.
However, 7 km/h is too low—currently, anything under 10 km/h is not a realistic value. This is due to the physical constraints: The foils would need to be so large that while they provide a lot of lift, they also create too much drag. This makes it practically impossible to “fly” using only wind power.
The feeling that you get planing earlier can be misleading. When pumping, an up-and-down motion is created that temporarily generates enough speed—usually over 10 km/h—to produce sufficient lift.
However, at this threshold, you’re not really flying stably but rather constantly pumping.
When there’s enough wind, you quickly accelerate by 3–4 km/h, which is then enough for stable flying. If you fall below this range, you have to actively pump again.
There is also a dedicated discipline for wing foiling: Wingfoil—it’s at the very bottom of the discipline list.
Thanks for the quick reply - setting the wind direction solved the problem - thank you.
It’s logical that a foil needs a minimum speed and 10 km/h is of course very slow on a straight line. However, large foils only have a stall speed significantly below 10 km/h and during the jibes it can get slower too, and you fly through the jibes.
As described above, with a large foil some of my jibes fall out of the statistics if I choose the discipline Wingfoiling, if I choose Kite (with Foil) it shows them correctly. Maybe I’m not the only one this happens to or I need to learn to foil through the jibes faster.
Best thanks again for the great app and best regards
Markus
In this case, a stall doesn’t really play a role.
Such a stall occurs when the angle of attack becomes too steep — this is largely independent of speed.
The speed you need for your foil to fly is relatively constant under consistent conditions.
When you’re flying, you have the advantage that in case of doubt, you still have a few centimeters of
