Love the app. Very easy to use and especially appreciate the different sailing types.

But I have noticed that the gybe counts look a bit low. For example this recent session where I did over 20, confirmed by the sailing tracks, only seemed to result in 3 counted.

What could be the cause?

I think I’ve found the (partial) answer. I found another post in German and once translated I realised there is a manual wind direction feature which I used and this resolved the issue. The app thought the wind was coming from W when it was actually coming from E.

But, could I ask for an enhancement please. Rather than setting the wind direction through a picker which is quite laborious could it either be through direct input of the angle or, even better, through a custom control where you drag a pointer round a compass?

Thanks

I experience similar issue, I may nail 100% of the gybes but still the stats show a high % missed

Hi, yes that is the way to correct it. and the request you made is what is coming with V2 very soon 🙂

please check the wind direction. you can see it by scrolling down to the polar diagram. the purple line there indicates the direction from which the wind is coming. if you open the top right menu (3 dots) you will find the option to adjust the wind direction. does it work?

I tried that and it didn’t work.
The wind direction that the app was showing was actually pretty much accurate, but I slightly modified it just to see what was the effect. The gybes stats still show incorrect, I missed only one gybe today however the app says I missed 6. Any other recommendations?

Hi,

if the jibe stats are still not correct.
What device did you used to record the session?

Sometimes it could be that if the datapoints are to less, the calculation does not work.
If you will you can send me a file (GPX), so I can check what the problem might be and can maybe provide a solution.

Hi Matthias,

Have attached a GPX file from a recent session where I think I did 15+ gybes but Windsport thought it was 8 or 7 after I manually adjusted the wind direction.

I use an old Sony Aqua phone which is in a waterproof bag inside my wetsuit. Looking back on other sessions sometimes the counts are right other times they are low (maybe when I’m going slower?) and I use the same phone each time.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for sending the file. I reviewed it and here’s what I found:

- 19 jibes overall
- 2 flying jibes
- 9 non-flying jibes
- 8 failed jibes

These numbers seem accurate based on the map and the speed graph.

On the map, when the color is white, it indicates you are no longer flying. This means that if the color is white at the end of a jibe, it is not counted as a fully flying (or planing) jibe. Additionally, if the white line does not form a smooth circle but instead goes in multiple directions, this typically signifies a failed jibe. While it doesn’t necessarily mean you fell into the water, it strongly suggests that you likely lost momentum, which is why it is classified as a failed jibe.

The speed graph further confirms this behavior. You can see that when the speed drops below the green line (which represents your minimum speed required to fly or plane), it is no longer considered a flying jibe. If the speed approaches zero, it is classified as a failed jibe.

To clarify, a fully planing or flying jibe requires you to maintain at least the minimum speed throughout the entire jibe. This means you need to travel about 10 meters before and 10 meters after the turn while still planning or flying. Simply turning in the other direction and then stopping does not count; you must continue to plane or fly for 10 meters to have it recorded as a flying/planing jibe. If you do not maintain your speed, it will be counted as either a non-flying/planing jibe or, in the case of a complete stop, as a failed jibe. The rules regarding the 10-meter distance still apply even if you do not plane.

I understand that achieving a fully planing jibe is challenging, but the goal is to help you focus on your technique so you can improve.

Additionally, I noticed some drops in accuracy in the recordings. This may be related to how you carry your phone. If it’s inside your wetsuit, the 3 to 5mm neoprene can interfere with the signal. Ideally, you should carry your phone on your upper arm. There, the signal is generally better due to fewer obstructions overhead, and your upper arm tends to have less movement and vibrations compared to your hand.

Does this make sense?

Hi Matthias,

Yes, the calculations and criteria do make perfect sense. In fact, I’ve foil gybed and bounced off the water and the tracker has been very generous and counted as a planing gybe. But I’ll take it!

Looking again at the stats the tracker did get the number of gybes right. I was convinced they were wrong but going back realised it accurately counted thyen. I’ve attached a session where they weren’t correct but that may be a combination of slow speeds, inaccurate steering and the phone.

I used to have the phone on my arm but found it too easy to nick the waterproof casing when it was exposed like that. I might have to upgrade to a Garmin!

Love the app by the way. Covers all the water sports I do.

Regards

Paul

Hi,

The bounce is OK for foiling.

Based on the screenshot, I can’t say much, but it looks like several signals were lost or had too little accuracy, as I can see some straight lines. That might be why the jibe count is incorrect.

In any case, I will improve the algorithm further after the V2 release.

Thanks a lot for the feedback 🙂

From version 2.0.20 onwards wind data is collected in hourly windows, which resolves incorrect wind direction readings for most spots. You can also manually adjust wind and weather data in 10-minute intervals, so rotating winds are no longer an issue.
